El Congreso Mundial de la Papa (World Potato Congress Inc.) se complace en anunciar el Webinar: “Abriendo la caja negra de las pérdidas en la cadena de valor de la papa” a ser presentado por Luciana Delgado, el 12 de Diciembre de 2023 que comenzará a las 10:00 a. m., hora estándar del este (EE. Presentation Outline

The level of hunger and lack of access to healthy diets requires that we increase efficiency in the way we produce. Reduction of food loss and waste could play a crucial role in this regard. Despite progress, there is little measurement of the magnitude of the problem and the identification of the reasons and critical points across value chains.  The scarcity of data compounds this challenge. Acknowledging the inadequacies in current classifications and methodologies of measurement for improved data collection, the presentation addresses the measurement gap by proposing and testing innovative methodologies, encompassing quantity, quality, and value losses. It aims to identify the reasons behind these losses and where they occur. To effectively combat food loss, tailored policies must target specific commodities and contexts. Finally, we will showcase an app developed for efficient measurement of food losses at the producer level.

El nivel de hambre y la falta de acceso a dietas saludables requiere que aumentemos la eficiencia en la forma en que producimos. La reducción de la pérdida y el desperdicio de alimentos podría desempeñar un papel crucial en este sentido. A pesar de los avances, hay poca medición de la magnitud del problema y la identificación de las razones y puntos críticos a lo largo de las cadenas de valor. La escasez de datos agrava este desafío. Al reconocer las deficiencias de las clasificaciones y metodologías de medición actuales para mejorar la recopilación de datos, la presentación aborda la brecha de medición proponiendo y probando metodologías innovadoras, que abarcan pérdidas de cantidad, calidad y valor. Su objetivo es identificar las razones detrás de estas pérdidas y dónde ocurren. Para combatir eficazmente la pérdida de alimentos, es necesario aplicar políticas adaptadas a productos y contextos específicos. Finalmente, mostraremos una aplicación desarrollada para medir eficientemente las pérdidas de alimentos a nivel de productor.

Luciana Delgado

Luciana Delgado is a Senior Research Analyst in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit, with experience ranging from agribusiness to value chains to agrifood systems as well as agronomy. At IFPRI, Luciana works on global, regional, and local value chains; agroindustry; and food losses. Prior to joining IFPRI, she worked with the private sector in agroindustry. Her expertise lies in strengthening agricultural research and development programs, upgrading value chains, measurement of and interventions to reduce food losses across the value chain, food waste measurement, and assessing market opportunities for linking smallholders to dynamic markets. Her regional experience encompasses Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Luciana has published several peer-reviewed academic articles including in Food Policy, AEPP, and Rural Studies. and she holds a PhD in Production Ecology and Resource Conservation from Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands.

Luciana Delgado es Analista Senior de Investigación en la Unidad de Mercados, Comercio e Instituciones en el IFPRI (Instituto Internacional de Investigación de Políticas Alimentarias) con una experiencia que abarca desde agronegocios hasta cadenas de valor, sistemas agroalimentarios y agronomía. En el IFPRI, Luciana trabaja en cadenas de valor globales, regionales y locales; agroindustria; y pérdidas de alimentos. Antes de unirse al IFPRI, trabajó con el sector privado en la agroindustria. Su experiencia radica en el fortalecimiento de los programas de investigación y desarrollo agrícola, la mejora de las cadenas de valor, la medición y las intervenciones para reducir las pérdidas de alimentos a lo largo de la cadena de valor, la medición del desperdicio de alimentos y la evaluación de oportunidades de mercado para vincular a los pequeños agricultores con los mercados dinámicos. Su experiencia regional abarca África, Asia y América Latina. Luciana ha publicado varios artículos académicos en revistas científicas, incluyendo Food Policy, AEPP y Rural Studies y tiene un doctorado en Ecología de Producción y Conservación de Recursos de la Universidad e Investigación de Wageningen en los Países Bajos.
